Current Topics in Management |
 |
|
Publication Co-sponsored by the ICAM
Current Topics in Management This annual series presents basic research on the theory and practice of management and administration. It includes both invited contributions and revised versions of papers presented at the annual International Conference on Advances in Management. Current Topics in Management exemplifies ICAM’s comparative orientation, in its broad scope of management and administration perspectives, in its diverse locations of research as well as its application, and in its comparisons of findings, methodologies, and operational definitions.
Some of the distinguished scholars who contributed to the series are: 1. Robert A. Baron, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 2. Robert T. Golembiewski, University of Georgia 3. John F. Grant, Colorado State University 4. William R. King, University of Pittsburgh 5. Edwin A. Locke, University of Maryland 6. Craig C. Lundberg, Cornell University 7. Kenneth D. Mackenzie, University of Kansas 8. Ian I. Mitroff, University of Southern California 9. Edgar Schein, MIT 10. Duane Windsor, Rice University
2007 Current Topics in Management (Vol. 12) We conceived the Series—Current Topics in Management—about twelve years ago; we are now in 2007 and have completed the 12th volume; and the challenge has now shifted from keeping the Series going to improving the quality of the content of each succeeding volume. How does this volume attempt to meet our resolve to do better as we move deeper into the Series? Overall, Volume 12 contains 11 contributions divided into four sections, which are identified below and also constitute the basic structure of this Introduction. The editor attempts to frame the volume with Chapter 1. The other chapters were the survivors of competitive reviews of 124 submissions to the thirteenth annual International Conference on Advances in Management held at Lisbon, Portugal during July 2006. Competitive papers were evaluated through a double-blind review process, and several invited papers also were reviewed. During this review process, each chapter was revised two to three times to improve quality. To accommodate to the desiderate of linkage, the chapters below are sorted into four major sections: (1) Managing Evolution and Transformation, (2) Managing Inappropriateness, (3) Issues in Strategic Management, and (4) Entrepreneurship and Behavior in Organizations. A brief review of each chapter is provided to help orient the readers. This 1st section contains three chapters that deal with organizational transformation through reengineering for improving business processes, an organizing framework for the emergence of new organizational forms, and concepts and forms of bricolage in organizations which involves creative use of resources to deal with a problem. The 2nd section contains two chapters that deal with some unusual situations: managing global imbalances that require cooperation and commitment from all countries and one of the most important contemporary phenomena—misrepresentation or radical distortion of reality. The 3rd section contains three chapters that deal with the relationships of board of directors' attributes, conflict, and shared mental models to board effectiveness, controlling CEO compensation through an independent board of directors, and ecologically responsive behavior of corporate actors. The 4th section contains three chapters that deal with opportunity based approach to the theory and research in entrepreneurial discovery research; a study of the moderating effects of goal commitment, task feedback, and reward for competence on the relationship between work overload and creativity; and guidelines to managers for the diagnosis of the spiritual health and intervention to enhance spirituality at work. The series will be of particular interest to management and administration practitioners; students and scholars in organization science, organizational psychology, communication, and sociology; economists; and labor studies specialists.
